RE: North Algona Wilberforce Township:
Community Food Connections
November 3 marks the 2023 Harvest Soiree, an event organized by local nonprofit the
Ottawa Valley Food Co-operative. The fabulous 4 course dinner made of food grown by
producers in our community celebrates the harvest, as well as the Ottawa Valley Food
Cooperative’s move to 675 Snodrifters Road.
North Algona Wilberforce Township’s 2020 Strategic Plan outlines prioritizing supporting
local food initiatives, and this year those seeds planted in 2020 are ready for harvest as
the OVFC moves into the building NAW became responsible for this year.
“We are pleased to house the Ottawa Valley Food Cooperative at 675 Snodrifters
Road,” said Mayor James Brose. “Our Council is passionate about food security and the
connection with our local producers. Renting the space to the OVFC strengthens this
connection, utilizes the building year round, offsets operational costs and aligns with our
strategic plan. It also supports our goal of ensuring this remains a viable community
space, providing a venue for the Bonnechere Cup Snowmobile Races and a rental
facility for various community events”.
In April, 2023, Council passed a resolution to combat food insecurity. “Our first Delivery
Day will take place here on October 24,” said Connie Cull, long-time OVFC volunteer.
“The facility is versatile and well-situated behind the Foodland Grocery in Eganville.”
Val Hinsperger is a long-time Ottawa Valley Food Co-op volunteer. “I’m so excited
about the move to the new space. With such a great kitchen it looks like we can expect
even more exciting activities from the OVFC and food service groups. Stay tuned!”
